Berry Recruitment are looking for a Cleansing Operative with a driving license to start ASAP in Southampton for a local authority.


Key Duties to include:



  • Working as directed by the Working Supervisor or Team Leader to undertake planned and reactive work, ensuring that work undertaken complies with recognised performance standards.

  • Undertake duties of a Street Cleansing Operative including manual sweeping, litter picking and other cleansing operations and use of relevant plant, equipment and cleaning chemicals.

  • Drive vehicles up to no more than 3.5tonne GVW including vans, tipper vehicles and any other vehicle or plant relevant to the post.

  • Responsibility for the security, correct usage and care of all vehicles, machinery, tools and equipment

  • Completing written records of a routine nature, including Time Sheets, Vehicle Log Sheets etc. as required.

  • To promptly report all defects, losses, damage, accidents, hazards and near misses to the Working Supervisor or any other designated person supervising the area of works.

  • To report issues in the city that are detrimental to the environment or safety issues that could affect staff or members of the public (for example - graffiti, vandalism, potholes, missing slabs, antisocial behaviour) and taking action where safe and appropriate to resolve these infringements.

  • Be customer focused to help achieve continuous improvement and innovation in service delivery.

  • Attend team meetings and training courses/toolbox talks and positively engage with colleagues

  • Use all associated plant, vehicles and equipment in accordance with the relevant legislation.

  • Carry out daily cleaning of the inside and outside of the vehicle.

  • Assist with the loading of the vehicle ensuring the safety of the load at all times and to ensure that vehicle is not loaded in excess of Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW). Loading may involve any items from litter, leaves, street sweepings, to large bulky items.

  • Dispose of all waste material as directed, to authorised waste disposal sites and transfer stations in accordance with the site rules and regulations and complete relevant legal documentation and any other relevant documentation.

  • Carry out duties in a safe and proper manner both for yourself and for the well being of others in accordance with the Council’s Health & Safety Policy and relevant legislation.


This is to start immediately and the working hours are Monday to Friday 08:00-16:00.
