An exciting opportunity has arisen in the rostering team based in York. Our client is looking for a committed and enthusiastic professional to work as Roster Clerk and take overall accountability for rostering and management across railway business.



  • Main purpose of this role is responsibility for roster management of Drivers, Senior Conductors and Customer Service Assistants.

  • Production of daily / weekly rosters in line with agreed timescales, safety requirements, rostering principles and conditions of service.

  • Work to cover available turns using all available avenues, up to 1600 the day previous, and support Managers in organising cover for annual leave, sickness and other ad-hoc shifts due to short-notice absence as required.

  • Ensure effective liaison and communication between all relevant parties (e.g. Management Team, Operations Control, Staff Representatives etc.).

  • Assist the Management in implementing contingency arrangements and highlight any critical resource shortfalls as appropriate.

  • Keep and maintain absence and annual leave records of all employees.

  • Assist Payroll Team in clarifying any payroll queries.

  • Book hotel accommodation for employees for undertaking ad-hoc requirements (e.g. route refreshing, lodges training, etc.).

  • Organise route training programmes for pre-planned and ad-hoc diversionary routes, manage training, meetings and other requirements, and communicate details of such releases to the Assistant Roster Manager and ensure records are accurately maintained.

  • Provide support and guidance in regards forthcoming engineering works and its impacts on working pattern.

  • Responsible for resourcing of candidates with relevant diversionary route knowledge for pre-planned programmes of diversions during engineering work.

  • Communicate data regarding both planned and unplanned disruption to the wider business, and relevant external stakeholders.

  • Provide support in regards improvement of train service contingency and recovery plans.

  • Communicate with other areas of the business (e.g. Fleet) for the arrangement of ad-hoc VSTP movements in regards unit recovery / maintenance, including resourcing and other relevant arrangements.


Essential skills:



  • Knowledge and understanding of rail structures and rostering arrangements applicable to railway.

  • Understanding of rail diagramming principles and restrictions, including base train plan and route/traction knowledge requirements.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work with staff at all levels of the business.

  • Work well under pressure, be able to prioritise effectively and great decision making skills.

  • High level of IT skills (MS Office).

  • Ability to learn to work with a range of role-specific systems (CrewPlan, Linx, MPT etc.).



Desirable skills:



  • Geographical knowledge of the route

  • Knowledge of the UK rail industry
